Bariatric Surgery 101 – The Fundamentals You Need to Know

Obese people who have a body mass index, otherwise known as the BMI, of 40 and above are usually not normal. Aside from the social judgment and insecurity, people with severe obesity are prone to diseases.  Because their weight is extremely heavy, they can longer move like the normal ones. Now, if you don’t move around, your body will be weakened. And I don’t think sitting in the wheelchair your entire life will make you the happiest person as you can be.

It might be sad to say this but people who have a BMI of 40 usually don’t respond to various weight loss programs and exercises out there.  I know it is awfully sad to hear those things but you should not lose hope. There is a weight loss surgery or known as bariatric surgery. If you wanted to know more about it, feel free to read the facts below.

What is a Bariatric Surgery?
Bariatric surgery involves various procedures that reduce the size of one’s stomach either by removing certain parts, re-routing or resecting small intestines to a small pouch, or implanting a medical device such as a gastric banding.

Pros of Bariatric Surgery
Patients of bariatric surgery have reported to have shed an enormous amount of weight in just a year. Aside from the really big weight reduction, bariatric surgery also lessens morbidity and mortality.

Cons of Bariatric Surgery
Patients should also consider the adverse effects of undergoing a bariatric surgery. According to experts, bariatric surgery can provide complications including gastric dumping syndrome, pneumonia, incisional hernia, and infections. There is also a tendency to undergo reoperation as it needs maintenance. Obviously, bariatric surgery can be costly.

Final Thoughts
Getting into any type of surgery can be very worrying. You must keep this in mind that in real life, nothing can be undone. Once your stomach will go through the knife and got some parts removed, you can never put those things back together. Therefore, you must think of it over and over again. Be sure to stand on what you have decided and don’t ever, ever make an impulse decision because your life totally depends on it.
